Goethe! is a 2010 German feature film by director Philipp Stölzl. The production is based on a joint screenplay by Stölzl and writers Alexander Dydyna and Christoph Müller and chronicles the summer of 1772, when the then-young Johann Wolfgang Goethe fell in love with Charlotte Buff - an episode in his life that he subsequently adapted into his epistolary novel The Sorrows of Young Werther. The title role was played by Alexander Fehling. Lotte Buff was cast with Miriam Stein and Kestner with Moritz Bleibtreu.
The romantic drama was produced by Senator Film and Deutschfilm and shot mainly in eastern Germany and the Czech Republic between August and October 2009. By the end of 2011, Goethe! had reached over 740,000 moviegoers in Germany.
